Naturopathic Medicine is a unique approach to health and healing. Naturopathy recognises the inherent healing capacity within each individual and seeks to stimulate, enhance and support this instinctive ability in order to achieve optimal health and well-being.
Naturopathy is, by definition, patient-centered treatment. Naturopaths believe all living things have an innate ability to heal themselves. This vital force promotes self-cleansing, self-repair, and therefore self-healing.
The goal of the Naturopath is to discover the underlying cause of illness which is specific to the individual rather than merely focusing on the underlying causes of ill-health,.
A Naturopathic Consultation involves taking a comprehensive history of the patient to determine where in the body the dis-ease lies. The Practitioner may use various methods of identification such as laboratory testing, iridology and tongue diagnosis.
Naturopaths treat their patients holistically, taking into consideration the individual’s biochemistry, biomechanics, emotional and environmental predispositions; assessing the immune system, hormonal system, nervous system, and detoxification/elimination pathways, which all work as a unit to ensure survival.
The body’s self-healing ability can be better understood if one takes into account the fact that homeostasis, or biological balance, is the main characteristic of any healthy system. Given the proper support, care, and the chance to function freely without suppression, the system can be brought back to a state of balance or “ease” (as opposed to “dis-ease). restoring vital health.
A good example is fever. When the body is invaded by a pathogen (a substance capable of producing illness or disease), the body will usually respond by producing a fever to fight the invader. If the body is properly supported through nutrition and rest, the fever will boost the immune system and permit the recovery of health.
Each individual has their own unique set of symptoms and reactions which will dictate the approach the Naturopath takes to treat them. This is why each person seeking help from a Naturopath will receive a personalised treatment Programme which will be designed to help to restore health by natural means which may include herbal medicine, acupuncture, naturopathic manipulation, nutritional guidance and change of lifestyle if necessary.
- Prevention is preferable to Cure
- The underlying cause is identified and not the disease
- The whole person is treated – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – not the disease
- The individual is unique; each person responds in a different way
- Ill health is a result of the internal disorder of the body
