Natural Practices Clinic in Alderley Edge, Cheshire (South Manchester), are specialists in Colonic Hydrotherapy treatments and have been treating clients for many years. See Map and Directions for location.
Colonic Irrigation, also known as Colonic Hydrotherapy, is a colon cleansing treatment, that we have been offering to our customers for many years.
To the cynics who claim that Colonic Hydrotherapy is unnecessary and the body is perfectly capable of disposing of its own waste naturally, we would say that it may well have been the case many years ago when the food consumed was grown naturally. Nowadays most foods are treated with chemicals, additives and preservatives which interfere with the body’s natural processes.
ATTENTION MEN: We treat as many men as women – maybe more. Men are usually embarrassed talking about Colonics. We’re not embarrassed – we do this all day, every day (apart from Sundays).
Please phone us now to make an appointment. Just do it – you’ll feel so much better. 01625 549000
Simple explanation of Colonic Hydrotherapy / Colonic Irrigation: It compares to having a spectacular bowel movement accompanied by a feeling of deep satisfaction….
More detailed explanation:
Colonic Hydrotherapy, also known as Colonic Irrigation, is a method of cleansing the colon of toxic waste.
Toxic waste is absorbed through the large intestine and it is thought that the average person may carry around between 7 – 25lbs of toxic waste.
Toxic overload is responsible for many body imbalances which can lead to serious health problems.
Your colon is designed to eliminate waste from the body but a combination of poor diet, improper food combining and prescription drugs may impair its ability to function correctly.
The Colonic treatment itself exercises and tones the bowel thus aiding the evacuation of waste both during and after treatment. The toxic load on the body is reduced.
Colonic Hydrotherapy is a safe and easy way to cleanse the colon of old waste material and harmful toxins. The treatment helps restore the pH balance in the body, stimulates the immune system and provides a favourable environment for ‘friendly’ bacteria.
Although large numbers of friendly bacteria are expelled during treatment, they quickly breed back up to strength, and the environment after treatment is usually better than before, thus leading to a better balance.
A Colonic treatment leaves you feeling clean and revitalised.
It was used in UK hospitals until relatively recently when the cost became uneconomical in face of strong purgatives used before bowel procedures. Colonic treatment is now widely used throughout the UK and is particularly useful in treating:
- Primary bowel conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and constipation where the bowel can be normalised through water temperature variation during treatment.
- Some organic disease states such as diverticulosis where regular elimination is important. Bowel transit time is improved.
- Many secondary conditions, especially those affecting the other eliminative organs (skin, urinary tract and lungs), where they are accompanied by poor bowel mechanics.
- Body detoxification, when accompanied by dietary measures.
The benefits of Colonic Hydrotherapy can often be quickly observed in the form of improved bowel function together with clearer skin, more mental clarity and fewer headaches. Circulatory, immune, inflammatory and weight problems can also often improve with Colonic treatments when accompanied by recommended diet and lifestyle changes. After treatment, the bowel is better able to absorb nutrients and less likely to absorb enterotoxins. Colonic hydrotherapy, unlike the use of laxatives, enemas or slant boards, is not habit-forming and actually improves the tone of the colon.
- Cleansing regimes
- Liver/gall flushes
- Weight loss programmes
DID YOU KNOW?
- 20% of the UK population suffers from IBS symptoms at some time during their lives, and 5% are chronic sufferers. It is more prevalent in females.
- Laxative sales in the UK are multi million £’s per annum.
- The ideal bowel transit time is less than 24 hours.
- In adulthood, all our vitamin K needs are provided by our own bowel bacteria.
- There are more bacteria present in the colon than there are cells that make up our own body.
- The repercussions of poor bowel function may be seen throughout the body in a wide range of health problems.
The Procedure During a treatment water is gently introduced into the colon via the rectum with special massage techniques. The water begins to soften and cleanse the colon of faecal matter and old deposits which are then discreetly piped into the drain line without offensive odour and without compromising the dignity of the patient. Modesty and confidentiality are preserved at all times. If requested, a herbal infusions may be used during colonic treatment, and a probiotic (friendly bacteria) implant may be given afterwards if indicated. We advise you take bowel cleansers to complement the Colonic hydrotherapy and to ensure the maximum benefit from your course of treatment. To check whether the procedure is suitable for you please look at the list of Contra-indications
FAQs Is it embarrassing? Not at all. The Practitioner will leave the Treatment room while you remove lower undergarments in privacy and put on a treatment gown. Modesty and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
What does the treatment involve? Filtered water at a carefully regulated temperature is introduced under gentle gravitational pressure through the rectum into the colon. With special massage techniques, the water softens and cleanses the colon of faecal matter and old deposits which are then piped away with the waste water.
How long does a treatment take? Actual treatment time is about 30 – 40 minutes but you should plan a total of one hour duration. There is a Consultation during the first session to highlight any existing health problems. Is Colonic Hydrotherapy completely safe and does it hurt? Treatments are much safer than a common enema and it doesn’t hurt. How does a Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment compare to an enema? An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon, whereas with Colonic Hydrotherapy the entire length of the colon is reached. One Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment is equivalent to 30 enemas.

Do I need to do anything prior to treatment? No special preparation is necessary although it is advisable to avoid having a large meal just before your treatment.
Can I work directly after having treatment? Certainly, you can work just as you would after a regular bowel movement. Again, there are no special precautions but as a Colonic is a detox, eat lightly, avoiding spicy / fatty foods and alcohol for the rest of the day Our Practitioners are also qualified in other disciplines – Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine and Natural Health so we don’t just offer Colonic treatment we also give practical advice on how to be healthier with perhaps a few minor changes to your lifestyle – you can also discuss any health concerns you may have.
