Thyroid Hypothyroidism Underactive Thyroid

Thyroid - Hypothyroidism - Underactive Thyroid

The hormones of the thyroid gland regulate metabolism in every cell of the body and it therefore follows that a deficiency will affect almost all body functions.

Adult symptoms include low basal body temperature, depression, difficulty in losing weight, dry skin, headaches, lethargy or fatigue, menstrual problems, recurrent infections, constipation and sensitivity to cold. In children, can cause delayed growth and mental development.

Severity of symptoms range from very mild to severe deficiency states (myxoedema).

METABOLIC:
General decrease in the rate of utilization of fat, protein and carbohydrate
Moderate weight gain combined with cold intolerance. High cholesterol, high capillary permeability and slow lymphatic drainage - often results in swelling of tissue (oedema)

ENDOCRINE:
In men - loss of libido

In women - prolonged and heavy menstrual bleeding with a shorter cycle (less than 28 days apart). Infertility may be a problem. In pregnancy, miscarriages, premature deliveries and still births are common.
Skin, Hair and Nails - dry rough skin covered with superficial scales, hair is course, dry and brittle. Hair loss can be quite severe - nails thin and brittle and typically show transverse grooves
Psychological - Sensitive brain, depression weakness, fatigue, later onset difficulty concentrating and extreme forgetfulness

MUSCULAR & SKELETAL:
Muscle weakness, joint stiffness

CARDIOVASCULAR:
Thought to predispose Atherosclerosis due to the increase in cholesterol and triglycerides. Can also cause hypertension, reduce Heart function and reduce HT rate
Shortness of breath, constipation and impaired kidney function are other common features.

Often medical intervention is necessary but many herbal and nutritional supplements combine well with the prescribed medication to enhance well-being.

Natural Practices recommend:

Some clients experience many of the stated symptoms yet blood tests show the thyroid as functioning. A Hormone/Vitamin & Mineral screening can identify the sub-clinical thyroid problems by showing if the energy of the thyroid is out of balance. All of the thyroid hormones are also checked. This test is invaluable and correct supplementation has prevented people from heading down the path of life-long Thyroxine and has helped people revert to their natural, energetic selves.

You may wish to use the Barnes Test.

Please telephone or email to book an appointment for a Hormone/Vitamin & Mineral test.
