Osteoporosis Porous Bones

Osteoporosis / Porous Bones

Osteoporosis is a bone disease - there is a gradual loss of bone and risk of fractures. Poor nutrition, anorexia, too little exercise, excessive weight loss, smoking, early menopause / hysterectomy, excessive alcohol and hormonal imbalance especially after the menopause can contribute. The entire skeleton is involved in bone loss but it is usually greater in the spine, hips and ribs. There is usually a decline in bone mass after 40 which is accelerated in osteoporosis sufferers

Osteoporosis is most common in post-menopausal Caucasian women. Symptoms include a decrease in height. Spontaneous fractures of the hip and vertebrae may occur

Weight-resistance exercises

Increase calcium-rich foods (from plant sources) e.g. Broccoli, kale, spinach, sesame seeds, almonds, lentils and beans

Check for over-acidity as this causes calcium to leach from the bones. This check can be carried out using pH balance testing strips. If acidic, Naturopathic advice will help to address diet and correct supplementation. A Screening for Hormonal Imbalances will be very beneficial.
