Lymphatic Congestion or Lymphoedema

Lymphatic Congestion or Lymphoedema

The tissues of the body are surrounded by a colourless fluid containing mostly water and protein. This fluid is known as lymph. The lymphatic system drains away excess fluid from the tissues. Lymph vessles drain the fluid through a number of lymph nodes before emptying the fluid back into the bloodstream.

Lymph nodes of varying size are found throughout your body, and different people have different amounts. There are more lymph nodes in certain areas of your body. For example, in your armpit there are around 30-50 small nodes.

Lymphoedema is a chronic swelling that occurs when lymph fluid does not fully drain away from the tissues. Excess fluid builds up and causes swelling (oedema), because it is unable to drain away as normal.
The symptoms of lymphoedema vary between individuals and in severity. Affected areas of the body may display the following:

  • swelling,
  • sensation of fullness or heaviness,
  • tightness and stretching of the skin,
  • reduced movement of the joints,
  • thickening and dryness of the skin,
  • discomfort and pain, and
  • lowered immunity in affected areas.

You may first realise you have swelling in an arm, for example, because your rings or watch feel tighter than usual.

There are many clients who come to us for various reasons and may not even realise that they have lymphatic congestion. It is a symptom that may not be terribly uncomfortable in the early stages, but it is a sign that the body is out of balance. At a cellular level we need the correct balance of minerals for the lymph to flow effectively. Mineral imbalance can occur through excessive use of a microwave, dehydration, excessive perspiration or too many diuretics (caffeine and alcohol).

We test for vitamin and mineral deficiencies using the 'Health Detective' Screening System. Once imbalances have been identified a programme is tailored that may include fresh juices, nutritional supplementation and herbal support of the lymph, blood and kidneys.

We also suggest a course of 'Lymphatic Drainage' to aid the lymph flow. During this session we will also discuss things that can be done on a daily basis at home to encourage lymphatic flow.

Please telephone or email to book an appointment for a 'Vitamin and Mineral Test'. The test takes 30 minutes.
